As the demand for wafers increases so does the pressure on costs. That's why many wafer and chip companies are moving towards wafer reclaim for various applications. Thus, the GaAs reclaim wafers, InP reclaim wafers and many more. Not only does utilizing a reclaimed wafer cut you costs but you also help save the environment. Part of reclaiming wafers is a process called backgrinding which has two types. Read on to know more about it.

Reclaiming Wafers

Wafer reclaiming is an inexpensive way to produce monitor, prime, and test wafers. It helps cut down costs without sacrificing the quality of the wafers. So, you get affordable wafers with the best bulk properties. But reclaimed wafers do not have the same thickness as a virgin wafer does. It's because reclaimed wafers go through a series of stripping to remove contaminants and unwanted materials on its surface. Reclaiming can also be done up to three times.

Reclaiming Process

Reclaiming wafers involve inspection, evaluation, and sorting to make sure that there are still enough materials to work with. Next, the wafers will go through a chemical strip to get rid of the thin films. Then, the wafers will go through lapping. Polishing will make sure that the surfaces of the wafers are flat and with a mirror finish. The final step would be cleaning GaAs reclaim wafers before they're packaged.

Coarse Grind

Coarse Grind allows the stripping of metal layers off of wafers with ease using the same tool utilized for back grinding. Coarse grinding can achieve this without forcing out or loading. Because of this, reclaiming wafers have become simpler.

Fine Grind

Fine grinding is designed for thin wafers. This process is used to achieve a smooth surface finish and a uniform topography.
