Silicon carbide is changing what an EV inverter or a DC fast charger can look like, mostly because it lets both run hotter, faster, and smaller than silicon-based designs ever could.

That matters more than it sounds like it should, since an inverter's job is simply to convert battery power into the alternating current that drives the motor, and every watt lost along the way becomes heat rather than range.

Why SiC Outperforms Silicon in Power Electronics

The wide bandgap in SiC allows devices to switch faster and tolerate higher voltages with far less energy lost as heat. Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a Department of Energy lab, built a prototype all-SiC traction inverter that ran at nearly 99% efficiency while using fewer, lighter components than a comparable silicon design.

That efficiency gain is not just a lab number. Less heat means smaller heat sinks, lighter inverters, and, ultimately, more of the battery's energy reaching the wheels rather than being lost to a cooling loop.

What This Means for Fast Charging

Fast chargers face a similar bottleneck. Testing of SiC MOSFET power modules in EV charging converters has demonstrated efficiencies above 98%, compared with the higher losses typical of silicon-based charger designs.

Higher switching frequencies also reduce the transformers and capacitors in a charger, which is part of why newer SiC-based fast-charging hardware can be more compact than older silicon equivalents while handling more power.

For drivers, that translates to chargers that run cooler, handle higher currents, and spend less energy fighting their own heat buildup, which is a meaningful piece of the real-world charging time equation.

Sourcing SiC for Power Electronics Projects

Prime-grade SiC substrates remain expensive relative to silicon, which is why many fabs pair new material purchases with SiC wafer reclaim to stretch their budget across more development cycles.

For teams also evaluating GaN alongside SiC for lower-voltage, higher-frequency designs, it is worth comparing both wide bandgap options before committing to a substrate strategy.
