If you own anything with an electronic component, there’s a pretty good chance that it has a silicon wafer in it. Silicon wafers play a major role in the electronic circuitry in many electronics and other technology products and applications. When it comes to silicon wafers, there are two main varieties. They are undoped and doped silicon wafers. Let’s take a look at the different types of silicon wafers as it pertains to silicon manufacturing.

Undoped Silicon Wafer

An undoped silicon wafer is a pure crystalline form of silicon. The undoped silicon wafer is an ideal semiconductor. It is also referred to as an intrinsic silicon wafer.

Doped Silicon Wafer

A doped silicon wafer is created by adding dopants into the silicon crystal during its formation. The doping can then be done in a variety of ways. Adding boron will create a P-type material. Adding other elements, such as arsenic, antimony and phosphorous, helps to fabricate an N-type of material. The P-type silicon wafer has several positively-charged holes, whereas, the N-type silicon wafer has a negatively-charged electron in it. The amount of dopant found in the wafer will help determine whether it is extrinsic or degenerate. If it’s extrinsic, it has little to moderate amounts of dopants in the silicon crystal. If it’s degenerate, it has high levels of dopants in it.
